106

When we were discussing who is having the oldest client in our department, Heather is the winner. An 106-year-old African American woman is the oldest client followed by an 105-year-old man. I have a Hispanic woman who is 104.

106.

Sandra said: I wonder how they feel right now. The whole world has changed!

Carolina: There were no computers, internet, electricity, tap water, plane, etc. back in the days.

And I asked: Women can't even vote in those days right?

The Americans didn't have an exact answer for me but they took it quite seriously. Heather and Sandra said: We should know this. And they googled the answer.

The ban was lifted in 1920s.

Which means this 106-African women who was born in 1904 witnessed the first votes of women when she was a teenager.

1904:
-Women had no voice in the society in the U.S.
-White was the only superior race in the U.S. or to them, in the whole world, something called the White Supremacy
-Chinese were strongly associated with marijuana pipes (ganja) and were seen as a filthy race in the U.S.
-Mainland China was still under the rule of the late Ching Dynasty (the infamous Empress Cixi died in 1908 at the age of 74)
-Hong Kong was in the 7th anniversary of British colonization
-There was no "Malaysia", but Tanah Melayu, colonized by the British
-Immigrants traveled by ships for months or years
-World World I didn't happen until more than 10 years after

Most of us read these from books, history books. But there are people who walked through these - been there, seen those. I have always been wondering if I wasn't to study psychology, I might consider dwelling into the area of history documentary. Hoho...

How about 100 years from now? Maybe
-Cancer is as curable as high fever
-A true ethnicity equality is achieved in the U.S.
-Human rights are more established in China
-The term bumiputera does not equal to biased privileges in Malaysia - all races compete and work together on the same par

And our grandchildren are probably feeling bad for what we've been through right now.

Change doesn't just happen immediately. It takes years, or centuries. Gender and ethnicity equality movement started more than 100 years ago, and they are still up on campaigning. I believe equality for all will happen eventually, be it gender, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, age, social class, etc., given if we still have activists fighting for them. Hoho.. That's what most of us think, that's none of our business. As long as I eat well, live well, why bother?

100 years from now. I didn't go into how the earth would look like, did I? The overflowing information out there about global warming and environmental issues don't need me to write more, especially we now have more propaganda about "love the planet Earth" in this month of April.

"We did not inherit the earth, we loaned it from our children. "

* By the way, this post was supposed to tell how amazing to have an 106 client. =___="
